Youtube Attacks Freedom

From the week of March 10, 2018 to April 22, 2018, Youtube took action to STOP content creators from using free and superior open source video formatting technologies OGG Theora Vorbis (https://xiph.org/).  Why?  Youtube has been silent, other than siding with the patented and licensed (fee based), closed source H.264 based technology, forcing creators to upload their work with inferior quality, at least doubling the size, doubling the storage and bandwidth requirements (DOUBLING the CARBON FOOTPRINT) to achieve the same communication satisfaction experience afforded prior to the week of March 10.

Why is this seemingly insignificant fact worth a blog?  Consider this simple analogy.  What if in one instant you could no longer turn to your significant other, your loved one, perhaps only inches away, and tell them your thoughts and feelings, without paying a fee?  After spending so much time communicating at no cost whatsoever, that fee based world might sting!  Truly we do not know what we have until we lose it.  Consider this excerpt from Xiph.org.

"The point is not that companies that try to make money on the new popularity of the net are in some way inherently immoral or greedy. Rather, the point is that companies must not be allowed to use the infrastructure we all depend upon as a weapon against their rivals to the detriment of all others. The Internet is a common resource and as with other cooperatively shared resources, the "Tragedy of the Commons" looms large. Competitive behavior dictates that eventually a company will act on their own interests to the detriment of all others unless a mechanism exists to prevent it."

Let me help by simplifying the words above.  When we are born, and our eyes open, we begin a life of communication.  First communication begins between mother and child, as both see and hear each other processing images and sounds in each other's brains.  Nothing invented in the history of time has achieved this level of successful communication.  Essentially, the natural means of communication human to human is most nearly replicated by combining images and sound i.e. video.  Now consider that such effective communication could be profitized?  Enter Youtube.  Above all, Youtube provides a no cost means of transmitting video by the masses to the masses, our most effective means of communication without being face to face.

I hereby contend that Youtube, in light of their profitization of our communication (via Ads, etc.) has an obligation - obligated to remain neutral in terms of the technology that content creators use to format their communications, their art, the real value without which Youtube would not exist. It is in Youtube's interest, even the planet's interest, to support all formatting technologies available thereby driving competitive forces to create tomorrow's formatting technology!

Please take time to read more at Xiph.org (https://xiph.org/about/) to learn a great deal more about the struggle of one Technologist (a technology creator) who has freely empowered content creators worldwide with his open source media formatting technology which has become embraced and accepted by the open source community.  As a content creator, I have found nothing superior to OGG Theora Vorbis for my art, what is your art worth?

  1. Holy Cow! Today, April 22, 2018 OGG Theora Vorbis support is restored at Youtube. I just posted a video using this format, albeit using the OGV extension and the upload was successful. I have no idea why, but thank you Youtube for restoring our freedom !
